House Finch (linnet) Control in California
نویسنده
چکیده
The house finch or linnet, Carpodacus mexicanus frontalis (Say) is a protected migratory nongame bird indigenous to California and found abundantly in a l l but the northern and mountainous areas. These finches attack more than twenty different crops and damage is demonstrated by fruit pecks, seed removal, and disbudding. When house finches cause agricultural damage control measures must be carried out under the general supervision of a county agricultural commissioner. Control practices involve the use of toxic baits, trapdecoy stations, and bio-acoustical devices. Most importantly, these control methods have been demonstrated to be safe, selective, and successful when employed by persons properly trained in the ecology of the species.

The Potential of Compound U-12171 as an Avian Repellent
Tests of the effectiveness (primarily reduced plant damage) of U-12171 to repel linnets from, or reduce the amount of feeding damage on, Gem hybrid broccoli suggest that: 1) concentrations above 1.50 lb./acre deterred avian depredations whereas lower concentrations did not; 2) the "hop-scotch" feeding pattern of linnet groups may have contributed to repellency since high concentrations in one a...
متن کاملCan a solitary avian species use collective detection? An assay in semi-natural conditions.
Collective detection (e.g., enhanced predator detection through the vigilance of conspecifics) is expected to have evolved particularly in social species. However, we assessed the degree to which an avian territorial species (California towhee Pipilo crissalis) would use social cues about predation in a semi-natural assay. We also exposed a social species (house finch Carpodacus mexicanus) to s...
متن کاملTable S6: Patterns of synonymous and nonsynonymous substitutions
We compared the frequencies of non-synonymous, synonymous and non-protein coding SNPs in the House Finch and poultry populations by comparing three groups of SNPs. The first type were polymorphisms that likely arose in the House Finch MG lineage, as they are fixed in the poultry MG strains but are polymorphic amongst the House Finch ones. The second group are those SNPs that likely arose in the...
متن کاملVector-host interactions of Culex pipiens complex in northeastern and southwestern USA.
Studies on the vector-host interactions of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes by sequencing portions of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene indicate that Cx. p. pipiens f. pipiens predominantly feed on avian hosts (93.1%), and focus feeding activity on several key bird species, in particular the American robin, the gray catbird, and the house sparrow in Connecticut. However, Cx. p. quinquefasciatus i...
متن کاملVariability in Island Populations of the House Finch
--Coefficients of variation and generalized variances are compared for nine morphological characters from five mainland and four island populations of the House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus). The purpose is to test the idea that variability is reduced in isolated populations and that there is a "population variation parameter" that determines the level of variation in most characters. Variabilit...
